The Paseo Project returns this spring with their new annual event, The Spring Out.  The community is invited to the Taos Historic District for two nights, May 6 and 7, sunset to 10pm, for projections and performances. Centered around Taos Plaza, this free community event celebrates Mother’s Day weekend with the theme of flowers.

In collaboration with local museums, artists and arts organizations, take a stroll around the historic district and see a collective bouquet of art adorning building facades and exteriors, as The Paseo Project shares new perspectives, new stories, poetry and performances.

This year, four of Taos’ local museums will be presenting works from their collections, projected upon the walls of our iconic adobe architecture. Scheduled to participate include: The Harwood Museum of Art, Taos Art Museum at Fechin House, Couse-Sharp Historic Site, and the Millicent Rogers Museum. For 2022 we’re excited to have the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum as well as regional artists, including Maria Samora, Reilly Donovan, UNM-Taos Department of Fine Arts and Digital Media, and local youth from Taos High School and the Taos Elementary Arts Visiting Artist program.

“We’re excited to work again with our local museums in highlighting the incredible art collections that can be discovered within their vaults. For the Spring Out we bring the art outside the gallery walls, and project them in the streets of Taos,” explains Paseo Project’s Executive Director Matthew Thomas. “This year The Spring Out falls on Mother’s Day weekend. We are preparing to light up the downtown with the color and enchantment of flowers.”

UNM-Taos Department of Fine Arts and Digital Media will present a projection of the art and videos from the 2022 publication Howl: Art & Literary Journal. Howl is the voice of UNM-Taos and represents the powerful voices of Taos and its diverse Northern New Mexico culture.. And fresh for this year, The Spring Out will feature performances from Taos’ youth. Paseo Project’s Education Manager, Amber Vasquez, has curated a series of events with DanceWorx and Taos High School, titled “The Youth Voice Project.” Youth artists ages 12-18 will present dance and spoken word inspired by public art dispersed among the downtown historic district, alongside the projected artwork featured over the weekend.

“In a world of adults, young people's voices are often lost,” explains Amber Vasquez. “The Youth Voice Project seeks to empower youth voices and give them a platform to express their unique perspectives through dance and poetry. What stories will we hear when we listen? How will we see the world from their eyes? Watch, listen, and learn from these talented young artists who are learning to tap into the power of their creativity to speak their truths.”

The Paseo Project’s Spring Out is an annual event celebrating local art and community, and the liveliness that accompanies emerging from hibernation come springtime. Taking place during the Taos Spring Arts events organized by the Taos Art Council. For one weekend The Spring Out takes art outside the walls of our museums and into the streets of Taos.

The Spring Out is just one of a number of events the Paseo Project has planned for 2022. This summer the Paseo will be hosting three artists in residence, each featuring a variety of Artist Talks and community workshops and events, as well as their annual PASEO outdoor art festival scheduled for September 16 and 17. See paseoproject.org for more information as these events unfold.
