Capsule Installation and Launch
July 1 - September 19
A new sculpture by Christina Sporrong and Christian Ristow
Commissioned by Arroyo Seco Live & The Paseo Project
Capsule is an organically inspired mechanical sculpture which responds interactively to our community during this unprecedented time in history. The community is invited to capture their thoughts on paper and insert the notes directly into the sculpture. When Capsule burns, the combusting notes will kinetically set the sculpture into motion, causing it to open, exposing its inner core, and revealing a new dynamic shape. Capsule harnesses the transformative power of fire, not only to literally open itself, but also to send our collective hopes and dreams into the ether.
This commissioned sculpture which will respond in exciting and interactive ways to the time in which we find ourselves. Through the summer months, the sculpture will present itself in one towering form, which can be thought of as the “closed” position. While in this state, the public will be encouraged to participate by writing notes about this unprecedented time we are all living through, and inserting those notes directly into the sculpture. On the night of the big opening event, the notes inside the sculpture will be set alight, along with bundles of fire-wood also within, thereby kinetically setting the sculpture in motion and causing it to open. This opening will expose for the first time the inner central element of the sculpture, and reveal its overall dynamic shape.
To enhance audience interactivity, we encourage participants to photograph their notes prior to inserting them into the sculpture and post them on a social media site. In this way we create a permanent log of the ephemeral aspect of the piece.
