SOMOS Young Writers Program: Who are the Monsters In Your Life?
Young writers will write and record poems and short prose pieces inspired by Motomichi’s work and the theme of monsters they know. During the live event, DJs will play selected young writers’ works together with music so that the youth voices will be an integral part of the evening.
SOMOS Young Writers Program will host workshops to introduce youth to Motomichi’s work and provide a spark for them to generate poetry and short prose related to his themes. In addition to concerns about climate change and the environment, the young writers will be invited to reflect and expand on the concept of monsters and consider its relevance to their own experience. They will be encouraged to explore various cultural expressions of monsters and to write about concerns ranging from personal to global.
A jury of local writers will chose two pieces, and the DJs will integrate audio recordings of the selected writings into the live show. All youth writers will have the opportunity to make audio recordings of their pieces through the complimentary use of Cultural Energy recording studio offered by Robin Collier. These recordings will be posted on the Paseo Project website. The SOMOS Young Writers Program aims to provide youth with a platform and the tools to raise their voices in the community and world at large, through the spoken and written word, while creatively engaging with others and having fun.
Our collaboration with the Paseo Project is a terrific way to kick-off the twenty-third year of the Young Writers Program.
