Project Statement – Paseo Project Artist in Residence Fellowship (November 2026)
Panaiotis | Working Title: Proportions of Power
During his November 2026 residency with The Paseo Project, composer and interdisciplinary artist Panaiotis will develop and present a multimedia performance environment that merges sound, movement, text, and spatial design into an immersive, time-based experience. Rooted in the mathematical logic of the Golden Ratio, the project explores how proportion, structure, and rhythm can be used to examine the ideals and contradictions embedded within American democracy.
Envisioned for Atelier 111, the work will unfold as an evening-length performance of approximately one hour, structured through nested golden proportions. Within this framework, a series of interrelated compositions—drawn from Panaiotis’ larger body of work—will be arranged as distinct yet interconnected segments, each occupying a precise proportional relationship within the whole. The performance will feature a distributed ensemble of musicians, spoken-word performers, and dancers, positioned throughout the space to create a multidimensional sound environment.
Audience experience is central to the project. Moving beyond traditional fixed seating, the spatial configuration will invite fluid engagement, with visitors able to navigate the environment, encountering shifting layers of sound, movement, and meaning from multiple vantage points. A secondary installation space will offer a continuous or durational component, providing insight into the artist’s compositional process through interactive and educational materials.
The sonic landscape will combine original compositions, ambient soundscapes, and digitally processed fragments of familiar musical motifs, including references to patriotic songs. These elements will be interwoven with textual excerpts from foundational American documents such as the U.S. Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, creating a dialogue between aspirational ideals and the enduring complexities of governance, equity, and power.
Visual components will further extend this inquiry, drawing on the geometry of the Golden Ratio as both a formal device and a conceptual metaphor. Together, these elements form a layered investigation into harmony and imbalance—between mathematical perfection and lived social realities.
As part of The Paseo Project’s commitment to community engagement and education, Panaiotis will also lead a public workshop and artist talk, offering insight into his compositional methods, the use of algorithmic structures, and the integration of technology in contemporary performance. These programs will provide participants with a deeper understanding of how artistic systems can reflect and critique broader cultural and political frameworks.
Proportions of Power reflects The Paseo Project’s Artist in Residence Fellowship mission to support artists working at the intersection of disciplines while fostering meaningful connections between artists and the community. Through performance, dialogue, and shared inquiry, the project invites audiences to consider how the structures that shape sound may also illuminate the systems that shape society.
