“A Portal Between Present, Past, & Future.” | Interactive Installation
This interactive installation includes a projection of clouds rolling by through a fabricated doorway, with concrete stairs at the entry point. It is projected onto a wall to appear as a mirage, or false door to a timeless space. This gives the viewer an entry point to an alternate dimension that can’t quite be accessed, but merely observed. To the side of the doorway there is a mailbox.
Though the viewer can not pass through the threshold of time immediately, they are invited to take some note paper and an envelope, sit down, and write themselves a letter of gratitude in the present moment. They then address the envelope and drop it in the mailbox. They are informed that the letter will be mailed to them six months from now.
At the three month/halfway point to receiving their own letter, the artist will be mailing all the participants a postcard of various sky scenes and a special message. The postcard is meant to serve as a reminder to continue the act of grace moving forward while continuing to play with the portal of time.
About the artist: Christie Serpentine is a sculptor and interdisciplinary artist made and raised in Philadelphia, with a BFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Her process is driven by the vulnerability of the human condition and how that transpires as a tumultuous exploration of ideals, identity, and escapism. She utilizes color, environment, and various materials to contextualize emotional experiences, often turning them into immersive scenescapes. Christie has a professional background working on conservation and construction projects throughout North America; living and laboring in the backcountry of wilderness areas within Alaska, Arizona, and California. This background has fused itself into a large part of her practice, highlighting the scrutiny and microaggressions frequently met as a woman within labor-intensive fields. She currently resides in New Mexico, where she is actively nurturing the more tender and whimsical side of her experiences in relation to the land. This process is more about shedding limiting beliefs and connecting more deeply with the self through the Earth. Throughout her work she embraces her feminine perspective in search for the balance between beauty, rage, play, and resilience.
