The Paseo is planning a Taos Fall Arts Intervention that brings performance, installation and projections to the streets of Taos.

On Friday, September 26, 2014, The Paseo is planning to fill the streets with art for the 40th Taos Fall Arts festival. Our mission is to bring performance, installation and projections to the streets of Taos. For opening night we will link the pueblo to the plaza through the historic district of Taos and animate the streets that connect the festival venues. From the afternoon to the evening AND an after-party event that goes until the wee hours of the night - YOU can be a part of this exciting event!

Our Kickstarter Page

The Paseo was inspired by the need to create opportunities for established and emerging artists to explore and present work that intervenes with the public space and the community. This year, our partners at the Taos Fall Arts Festival are staging their festival exhibitions in several venues within Taos’ central core, all within easy walking distance from each other, thus providing the perfect opportunity for multiple artistic interventions! The Paseo festival will animate the 0.7 miles between the two main anchor events, the Taos Select and the Taos Open, engaging visitors between these venues with performance, installation and projections. The Paseo will span from Paseo Del Pueblo Norte at the Kachina Lodge, south to Kit Carson Park, then through the town’s Plaza and west to the Guadalupe Gym.

We have ‘soft commitments’ from great artists, which we are poised to confirm as soon as we have the funding to bring them here.

The Paseo has multiple meanings. It is the name of the physical road that runs through town, Paseo Del Pueblo (meaning North Town Trail in Spanish), and the verb pasear, to take a stroll. Our Paseo creates a path that connects Taos’ long arts history, the past to the future, the 1000 year-old Pueblo to the Plaza, which we want to animate with art and technology.

Although only one day – what a day. Starting at 4pm and continuing after sunset, The Paseo will play host to a number of local and visiting artists transforming our little town into a living gallery of public art and installation. And don’t forget the After-Party scheduled from 10pm to the wee hours of the night at Taos Mesa Brewing…DJ’s and entertainment to be announced!

From performance and installation art during the daylight hours to light and projection pieces that will take us into the night, The Paseo has something for everyone.

Our core team is made up of arts professionals with experience of exhibiting curation, production and project management. We also have a world-class advisory board giving their time and experience that will make The Paseo a success. You can learn more about us here.

We can do a lot in house but we need to raise money to pay artists, arrange accommodation, advertising, design and printing maps and programs. That’s where you come in. We hope you’ll join us in our mission. We want to pay the artists we invite, this is our biggest cost, we can do a lot voluntarily but this is one area we don’t want to compromise on.

Approximate Budget Breakdown:

10 Artists: $15K

Marketing (Print & Design): $4.5K

Rewards / Mail $1000

Documentation $1.5K

Kickstarter / Amazon fees $2.6K

Whether you have been attending the TFA for years, or visiting for the first time, if you are wishing that there were more opportunities to see work that explodes beyond the gallery walls and into the public space this is your chance to make it possible.

Whether you back us or not there’s something you can do for us that will make a huge difference

PLEASE TELL EVERYONE ABOUT US, AND SPREAD THE LINK FAR AND WIDE.

A big thanks from The Paseo team!

Risks and Challenges

This is an ambitious project. Collaborations with local organizations have been key to our development and we know will be essential in the success of The Paseo.  We are supported by and working with the Taos Fall Arts Festival. We have the full backing of the Town of Taos and their full assistance in acquiring any needed permits. They will assist us with liability insurance and communication with the local Police Department, Fire Department and the Department of Transportation. We have reached out to a number of Taos arts organizations and potential for collaborations have been growing. The Taos Center for the Arts, The Harwood Museum and the Taos Artists Organization have all expressed interest in working with us on making this truly a town wide event. This will take a small army of volunteers to pull off, including ‘community ambassadors’ to assist visiting artists, as well as local businesses to provide access for artists work, complementary food and lodging.

And then there are the artists. We have a received an incredible amount of enthusiasm from local and national artists. Though we only have ‘soft commitments’ from our artists now, with have gathered their full proposals, including installation plans and requirements, so we have no big surprises when the festival springs into action. As soon as funding is secured, We will continue work one-on-one with each invited artist, to insure the proper requirements to bring their art to the streets of Taos. We have created a great core team and an even more dynamic advisory committee with skills and experience that we believe will be invaluable in terms of production and project management. We are confident we can cover nearly all the issues that could arise in putting on such an event.

This little town on the high mesa still has the power to attract the creative and the adventurous. With your help we can extend an invitation to more artists – from all over the globe.
