Andreas Matt & Sarah Funk

Berlin, Germany

The Paseo Project, in partnership with Hotel Willa, is pleased to welcome Andreas Matt and Sarah Funk as October 2026 Artist-in-Residence Fellows. Working at the intersection of mathematics, art, and public engagement, the duo will lead a participatory residency exploring creative expression through mathematical form.

Titled “Math & Me / The Shape of Me,” their residency centers on the idea of mathematical self-expression—inviting participants to create visual works derived from algebraic equations. Using a tool called SURFER, which generates images from mathematical formulas, participants will “photograph” abstract mathematical surfaces and transform them into personal, expressive artworks.

Through a series of workshops and collaborative sessions, community members will explore questions at the intersection of art and science: What does it mean to understand something abstract? How can invisible systems—like mathematics—be used to express identity, emotion, and ideas? The residency will culminate in a public exhibition featuring works created by participants alongside contributions from the artists.

Matt and Funk bring extensive international experience in participatory formats and collaborative knowledge production. Their work emphasizes accessibility, co-creation, and the ability to engage diverse audiences in complex ideas through hands-on, creative processes.

Public programming throughout the residency includes:

  • Artist Talk with Andreas Matt & Sarah Funk
    Thursday, October 15, 2026, 5:30 pm
    The Gallery @ Hotel Willa
Free and open to the public

  • Family Workshop
    Saturday, October 17, 2026, 11 am - 1pm
    Twirl, Taos
An interactive, all-ages workshop introducing mathematical image-making through creative play

  • Exhibition Opening: Math & Me / The Shape of Me
Friday, October 23, 2026, Time TBD
    The Gallery @ Hotel Willa
Featuring works developed during the residency in collaboration with community participants

The Paseo Project’s Artist-in-Residence Program supports visiting artists in developing new work while fostering meaningful exchange with the Taos community. Matt and Funk’s residency continues this commitment, offering a unique opportunity to engage mathematics not as a distant or technical discipline, but as a creative, expressive, and deeply human practice.
