Paseo Project 2023 Interns
Taos , New Mexico

“The X Project” | Large Scale Multi Media Installation

What does the past, future and present of Taos look like? How do they intersect? How do they rely on eachother? In this Installation the 2023 Paseo Project Interns attempt to visualize the elements that make up the time line of Taos and the Paseo Project with a 10Ft X 8ft dynamic sculpture entitled The X Project.

The X Project strives to represent elements of the past, paying homage to the ancestral practices of our community. Elements of our present with visual representation of Taos community and environment through the eyes of the young adults who live there. The project will represent the possible future of Taos by bringing in technology and recycled materials.  The sculpture will also invite the community to express their artistic selves  inviting community and inclusive fun. And finally there will be a Paseo specific element at the core representing how it all connects together.

With support from Alice Ko

The X shaped sculpture will have 5 sections that make up the whole.

Past: For this section we will use elements from our historical building traditions. We hope to represent our past with adobe and other ancestral building materials used in its construction. It will be made from the earth we stand on because we built from the ground up to get us to where we are now. It will represent the foundation for things that come after it.

Future: For this section we are representing the future through the use of recyclized materials as part of its construction. We will use lights to both bring attention to this section and to bring the element of technology into theis section. By using recycled materials we intend on showing that this can be the next step for the future and how the continuing problem of trash must be addressed. This section will also tye into  the past by illustrating how solving the problems of past waste can lay the foundations that lead to a better future.

Present: This section of the X will be painted a flat color and will be projected on. This section  is meant to represent the present and where we are now. To convey the feeling of the present, the current 2023 Paseo interns get the opportunity to let their creative sides shine as they make their own reel of whatever they want. The interns have full creative freedom for what they want to include in their pieces. There are going to be three different videos playing on loop that is going to be projected onto that portion of the X. The first is a group reel.  All the interns will takes different pictures of Taos to show the community though their eyes. And There will also be two individual reels, one by Carsyn and the other by Darien showcasing their artistic interests on current topics. All reels will be submitted to the Paseo team members for editing and suggestions by mid August 17th.

Community Art Space: The community  art space section of the installation is the interactive component of the X. This section is meant to represent creativity, community, contribution, and diversity. This section is going to be a blank canvas made out of chalkboard paint. Guests can use chalk to draw whatever their hearts desire onto the X. By including this interactive element into our installation, not only does it make the art piece more engaging and fun but can help guests feel more included into the Paseo festival as a whole.
