The PASEO 2023
Internship Program
Engagement in STEAM
With funding from the J3 Fund, the LANL Foundation, and local donors, the Paseo Project continued its work in creating an education program to build pathways to careers with workshops and paid internships in event production and technical arts training, offered to northern New Mexicans aged 16 - 25.
The multi-week program was designed to incorporate both active Festival support work, intertwined with educational elements to ensure the interns acquired the skills necessary to succeed in the position.
Through this program, interns:
Learned technical skills with engagement in STEAM programming to understand the benefits of the Arts in relationship with Science, Technology and Math
Gained background knowledge in a variety of careers within the arts and non-profit sector
Practiced interpersonal skills by developing workplace responsibility and positive work habits and attitudes
Built a network of contacts and established professional contacts for future employment and mentoring
Gained worksite experience with responsibilities through an inspiring, dynamic and paid job
The 2023 Internship Program is supported by The Taos Center for the Arts

Outreach
Throughout the summer the interns were asked to help communicate the mission, goals, and creativity of The Paseo Project with social media posts.
Hands-on
This year the PASEO sourced all of their t-shirt's locally through T-Shirt Effex. Interns were invited over to learn about the process of screen printing from design to manufacturing. Interns designed and created their own special screen for their PASEO installation, the X Project.
Creating the Festival
Interns worked closely with the Paseo Project team in executing our biggest event of the year, The PASEO 2023! Meeting weekly, interns helped prep for the September event, organizing materials, cleaning up supplies, and painting the iconic X signs!
The X Project
This year the interns were invited to design and create their own installation for PASEO 2023. They came up with the idea of celebrating the 10th event with a large X that symbolized the past, present and future.
Community Engagement
The 2023 internship program provided a number of opportunties for our youth to join the Paseo team in community outreach activites and events. For the spring of 2023, interns joined the staff assisting artist in residence, Ruben Olguin, at the farmers market for his project collecting our communities stories of water and helping staff at the Harwood Museum of Art as gallery docents.
Assisting with Artists
Interns worked closely with our visiting Artists in Residence throughout the summer. They met weekly and learned about the art making process and what it takes to create a full scale art installation. Interns worked with NEA granted AIR Dason Culver for his new work, Culture Burn. Students worked with him in the studio and assisted in an end of residency open house.
Assisting with Artists
Ruben Olguin created a pop-up projection night, featuring over 6 small light pieces along Bent Street. Interns assisted in the set up and execution of the event, keeping the projections safe and active.
TCA Tech Workshops
The 2023 internship program takes interns on a journey through new opportunities in tech and event production. We worked closely with the TCA in offering tech workshops in sound, light, and projection. Interns received hand-on instruction and took on real responsibilities in setting up and using the equipment. The interns were instrumental in pulling off the annual PASEO event, as they managed artist equipment and installations.
STEAM Day Assistants
For PASEO 2023 we held a STEAM Day, inviting schools from around the county to get a first look at the PASEO 2023 artist installations. Youth were introduced to seven artist and their STEAM workshops that explored the elements of Science and Tech in the work. The full morning events were managed and guided by our amazing interns!
Meow Wolf - site visit
Through a special collaboration between The Paseo Project and Meow Wolf in Santa Fe, our interns were invited for special behind-the-scene tour of the Meow Wolf facilities and workshops. Interns were introduced to new job opportunities and future internships. And they had a lot of fun!
