The PASEO 2023 Education Program

PASEO 2023 STEAM DAY

Friday, September 15

The PASEO STEAM Day event brought together 175 students from seven different Taos County schools, ranging in age from 12 to 24 years old. STEAM Day included seven workshops and presentations by PASEO 2023 artists located in Kit Carson Park, the PASEO 2023 location. Artists arrived early to set up their demonstrations prior to the festivals. Participating students were introduced to the concepts and creativity of the artwork prior to the event. Originally planned to include three workshops and one keynote presentation, the event was adapted to allow students to audit a fourth workshop. This flexibility contributed to the overall positive experience of the participants.

"Shadow Stories" is an interactive puppet show that invites festival-goers to step into the spotlight and become the protagonists of their own tales. Positioned in front of a green screen, participants will be encouraged to unleash their creativity and perform, dance, or act out a story while being captured by a camera. Their movements will then be transformed into a lively puppet on a large screen, interacting with other animated characters in a distinct visual spectacle. Technology: Adobe Character Animator technology ensures a reliable and engaging performance, employing motion-capture cameras to accurately track the movements of the performers.

  • Las Pistoleras Instituto Cultural de Arte

The curriculum for this program and installation builds on the community work of Las Pistoleras Instituto Cultural de Arte and partnerships within the field of digital humanities. It focuses on organizing and making the archives of Enriqueta Vasquez and Father Jaramillo, two Chican@ community activists of the Civil Rights Era, publicly accessible. This final installation at PASEO 2023 explores the mobilization of archive to achieve terrestrial connection. Participants are able to engage with curated selections from the archives. Curated selections emphasize the region’s history of activism to protect community and nature, selected because of their potential to make an impact based on sight, sound, touch, smell and taste.

This working and final collaborative curation will be formalized by professors and students from Colorado College and artists, activists, community experts and community collaborators who are active partners at Las Pistoleras Instituto Cultural de Arte.

  • Twirl

This installation is part of Twirl's community program during which hundreds of children and adults have developed and created their own Nature Creatures. This program provides Social Emotional and STEAM learning through storytelling and making… what tall tales can grow from the forest floor!

On the nights of the Paseo 2023 Twirl invites the community to enter a magical forest in Kit Carson Park. Join us in making Nature Creatures using organic materials and your wildest imagination. We encourage you to explore the potential of natural things that we often overlook and get inspired to create your own character with its own story to tell. Come build and make together and add to a true community art installation!

  • STEMarts Lab

The STEMarts VR Mini Cinema and Lounge @PASEO comes to Kit Carson Park. This youth run installation features STEMarts Ambassadors stationed at each space chair serving as the experience guide. They assist with the VR headsets and guide participants in mind-bending journeys exploring their relationship to earth and space. Many participants have never experienced VR and the ambassadors are trained to teach them how to move safely in the 3D environments. The team of 10-15 Ambassadors will be completely in charge of the install and supervision during the festival.

STEMarts Lab, an artist-run non profit organization whose mission is to empower youth and communities through art, science and technology with a focus on raising awareness to humanitarian and ecological challenges on earth and in space. Artists, scientists, philosophers, educators, cultural specialists are brought together to explore the universe from diverse perspectives and share their experiences through year-long youth workshops and bootcamps culminating with sci-art installations presented at festivals in New Mexico and around the world.
